This year's Safer Internet Day (10 February) has the theme of 'Smart tech, safe choices - Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI', and we've got a brand-new resource to help teachers do just this.
Once again, we are partnering up our support for Safer Internet Day with Childnet, a key organisation that help to make the internet a better and safer place for children, and with whom we have historically worked with and supported on this topic.
As the Safer Internet Day website explains: "This Safer Internet Day we are exploring the impact of AI on all of our lives, looking at how AI can be used for good, and giving advice and guidance that empowers people to use AI safely and responsibly."
OFCOM outcomes, Government guidance and the Curriculum Review (Nov 2025) all highlight the need for greater emphasis on media literacy and discussions about AI in the classroom. That's why our brand-new Space Force - Analysing AI resource will introduce young learners aged 7-11 to some of the key ideas and concerns surrounding the topic of AI.
In this analysis-based lesson, learners will explore talking points surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) in connection with the screen industries. By examining an AI-generated marketing campaign for a film that will never be released, learners will discuss how easy or difficult it is to spot AI-generated content.
As they analyse different parts of the marketing campaign, including reviews and social media posts, learners will think about how difficult it can be to recognise media that has been produced using generative AI, and why this skill can be important.
We've also updated each of our Staying Safe Online resources, which are another fantastic tool for exploring Safer Internet Day, but are also relevant to use in the classroom all year-round.
The 7-11 edition explores the idea (and risks) of online friendships, while also looking at online comments and how negative comments can affect people, and exploring and evaluating the positive and negative aspects of online gaming.
In the 11-16 edition, pupils will consider their digital wellbeing by investigating how to identify safe and authentic content online, as well as focusing on authenticity and reliability, including issues around fake news and AI content.
For older learners aged 16+, young people will consider how the internet has changed our daily lives, including the language we use, and take a closer look at the world of social media, and debate whether the experience of being on social media has a more positive or negative impact. The resource also encourages them to consider changing technologies and to examine their relationship with their mobile devices.
While Safer Internet Day is a key moment in the calendar to broach these issues, online safety remains a topic to keep in mind the whole year round, and with the rapidly evolving nature of our digital world making it such a vital topic, we hope educators will continue to use these resources and keep the issues they explore in mind throughout the academic year.
