In this lesson, pupils will learn how to be good digital citizens by investigating how to stay safe and responsible online

Using a highlight from Ron’s Gone Wrong, learners will start by considering what it means to be a friend and whether friendships formed offline differ from those made online. They are asked to reflect on whether everyone they meet online is truly a friend.

The lesson then explores online comments, asking whether the comments we read are always written by friends. Using a highlight from the film Ralph Breaks the Internet, the class will think about how people might feel when they read negative comments. Learners will then create a poster outlining the dos and don’ts of posting comments online.

With a continued focus on friends and digital citizenship, the lesson moves on to online gaming. Using another highlight from Ralph Breaks the Internet, learners will think about the enjoyment of belonging to an online gaming community and the reasons why people play games. In this section of the lesson, they will generate ideas for a new game and consider how they would keep players safe while playing online.

Learners will go on to think about other ways young people use the internet and evaluate the positives and negatives of these activities. In a diamond nine activity, they will consider how safe some of these activities are and reflect on the sorts of risks that some activities pose.

The final optional section of the lesson has a focus on AI, asking learners what AI is and why it is important that we know when something has been produced using AI. The lesson concludes with a filmmaking task in which the class can think about what messages they want to communicate about the internet and AI.

Updating our resources

We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.

What our educators say

"As an alternative provision for learners who are not in mainstream school we use your resources in a slightly different way as they generally find it hard to watch a full length film. They are, however fantastic. "
