Actor Kenneth Branagh made his debut as a director in this screen adaptation of Shakespeare's patriotic play. As well as his duties behind the camera, he stars here as King Henry, formerly seen as the callow Prince Hal who becomes a man as he leads his troops over to France to capture its throne against seemingly insurmountable odds. Remaining relatively true to the Bard, Branagh still manages to set his adaptation apart from Laurence Olivier's earlier morale-boosting version by highlighting the more dubious aspects of Henry‘s campaign, while his cast list is an impressive roster of British acting talent.
The "Scottish Play" becomes a Japanese film as Shakespeare's drama of murderous ambition, Macbeth, is adapted by master director Akira Kurosawa.
