This Japanese anime is the deeply moving tale of a teenage boy and his young sister fighting to survive during World War II. Their home is destroyed, their father is a soldier who is away fighting, and their mother is killed by a bomb. At first they stay with an aunt - but she treats them badly, so they travel to the countryside where they find a cave to shelter in. The country is still under attack - but the light of the fireflies they capture to illuminate their cave provides a rare moment of joy. This harsh and haunting story is incredibly powerful and rewarding, and possibly the best war film ever made.
This film has a few uses of mild bad language and contains moderate war horror.
