In the amazing documentaries Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi, director Godfrey Reggio combined film of jaw-dropping scenes from around the world with unforgettable music to build up an epic portrait of a natural world that was careering off balance. In the third part of the series, Naqoyqatsi (a Hopi Indian word for "war as a way of life"), he turns his attention to the modern age of technology, machinery, and virtual reality. The results are as stunning as they often are frightening.
This visually spectacular German sci-fi classic (made, incredibly, in 1927) sees the rich live in skyscrapers and the poor toil underground.
