In 1946 Andy Dufresne is sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover. He's sent to Shawshank State Prison, where for the next twenty years he seems to be a model prisoner, despite protesting his innocence. But he still yearns for freedom - and he still longs to escape. Rejecting cliches of prison films, this thoughtful, measured film (based on a short story by Stephen King) instead focuses on human potential and the survival of hope even in the most hopeless situations.
Contains frequent strong language, violence and sexual assault
