Synopsis

In 1946, Harwell Laboratory in Oxfordshire became Britain's first Atomic Energy Research Establishment. This short documentary was made a few years later to promote the work of scientists at the facility and their research into peaceful applications of atomic energy, such as the use of radioisotopes in the textile industry and in cancer treatment. It is a fascinating insight into early nuclear research, detailing principles and applications that are still relevant today (although perhaps not the part about strapping radioactive materials to airplane wings!) The symphonic music and futuristic gadgetry might feel like a 1950s sci-fi film, but this archival piece plays an important role in documenting the history of scientific and technological innovation in this country.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
