Adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel, this historical drama, set in the late 16th century, introduces us to the free-spirited Agnes as she falls in love with the ambitious young storyteller William Shakespeare. Despite their contrasting backgrounds, the two fight for their love and begin a family, having to navigate Agnes’ mystical connection with the natural world and William’s desire to move to London and follow his dream of writing plays. When a tragic death strikes at the heart of the family, their world threatens to come crumbling down and both parents turn to their inner worlds to help them come to terms with their grief and loss. Immersive and emotional, this fictional imagining of how a personal devastation might have led to one of English literature’s greatest works combines full-blooded performance and beautiful cinematography to great effect.
