Synopsis

This playful, faithful version of Shakespeare’s classic comedy begins with Hermia and Lysander fleeing into the forest in order to escape Hermia’s father, who wishes her to marry Demetrius, who is in love with Hermia, but unaware that her friend Helena is in turn besotted with him. From there things get even more complicated and chaotic, particularly when the gang wander into a mysterious fairy world, and a trickster named Puck administers a secret love potion causing the would-be lovers to mix-and-match. Updated to 19th century Italy, but retaining most of the original text, this is a charming, accessible entry point into one of Shakespeare’s most endearing works.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
