The Amazon rainforest is home to many Indigenous populations, including the Uru-eu-wau-wau people. They first came into contact with non-Native Brazilians in 1981. Their land is supposedly protected, yet illegal settlers have been encroaching on their territory, burning and clearing areas in the forest for farming. This immersive documentary, partially shot by the Uru-eu-wau-wau people over three years, provides an on-the-ground look at their lives and their fight. The film follows 18-year-old tribal leader Bitaté, who uses a drone to collect footage and social media to raise awareness of what’s happening in his ancestral land. But it’s about more than defending one’s own territory: deeper in the rainforest lives an uncontacted tribe who is also under threat, and the fate of the Amazon, known as the ‘lungs of the Earth’ for its crucial role in global carbon cycle, affects all of us around the world. A rousing film about ecosystems and deforestation, produced by National Geographic.
