Synopsis

The Horse in Motion (1878) is a very early experiment in the innovation of motion pictures, in which British photographer Eadweard Muybridge projected a sequence of still images of a rider galloping, giving the illusion of movement. These iconic, flickering black and white images have inspired countless filmmakers, not least the video artist George Snow, who transports Muybridge’s horse and other samples of his photographic work into a new age of technology. In this short film, a tired man flips through a book of Muybridge stills, when like a frenzied dream, the images start dancing in psychedelic colours to the beat of electronic music. The frozen figures from over a century ago are playfully layered on a backdrop of buildings in Hammersmith and Fulham, London. This archive piece is a great example of 1970s aesthetic and early computer animation and highlights the self-referential nature of cinema.
