Synopsis

Made up of 65,000 painted frames, this is the first fully oil painted feature film, that cleverly brings to life the work of the Dutch Post-Impressionist Vincent van Gogh. Exploring the intriguing mystery surrounding his death, the film takes the form of a detective story reluctantly led by Armand, the son of a postman the artist was friends with. In possession of a letter from Van Gogh, Armand’s father instructs him to track down and give the letter to the artist’s brother Theo. But discovering Theo too has died, Armand must find someone else to take possession of the letter and in doing so unearths a series of mysterious events that call into question how the artist really died. With each frame replicating Van Gogh’s distinct painterly style, and every scene and character drawing inspiration from or even a complete replica of Van Gogh’s most celebrated pieces, this is a truly unique animation that tells the story of one of the most celebrated artists in the world through his own work.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
