Tim Jenison is not a painter, but a successful inventor who has predominantly worked in the field of computer graphics. As an art enthusiast fascinated with the works of Dutch 17th century painter Johannes Vermeer, Tim seeks to discover the mystery behind the magic. Refining his idea based on a camera obscura, influenced by the writings of David Hockney and Philip Steadman, Tim believes he can paint objectively, rather than subjectively. Putting his new tool into practice, Tim attempts to reproduce Vermeer’s masterpiece ‘The Music Lesson’ using the tools Vermeer himself had at his disposal. To do so, he first physically recreates the scene, and then painstakingly paints over a period of seven months. ‘Tim’s Vermeer’ is a fascinating documentary – written and presented by American magicians Penn and Teller – which questions authenticity, process, and the relationship between art and technology.
