This paranoid animation is set in a not-too-distant future Los Angeles. It follows a cop who goes undercover to find out who is distributing a brain-damaging drug called Substance D (D stands for Death). Though he's only meant to be posing as a drug user, the cop has become addicted to D, and in a dizzying twist begins to investigate himself (a side-effect of the drug makes him unaware of the parallel lives he is leading). Visually, A Scanner Darkly is stunning, made using a technique called rotoscoping, where actors are filmed on camera then their images are digitally reworked to deliver a graphic-novel effect.
Contains strong drugs references, language and sex. This film is recommended only for our oldest and most mature INTO FILM members.
