Visited by the witch next door, a baker and his wife are told they can break the spell they are under that means they will never have children if they bring her: a cow as white as milk; a cape as red as blood; hair as yellow as corn; and a slipper as pure as gold. In a whirlwind of musical and gothic fantasy, they venture into the woods to find them stumbling across Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Jack and the Beanstalk on the way. An adaptation of a Stephen Sondheim stage play, the film is wonderfully true to the gruesomeness of the Brother’s Grimm tales while adding dark humour, cheekiness and its own shocking twist ending.
