Synopsis

Based on the life story of the Godfather of Soul James Brown, this biopic chronicles his journey from extreme poverty in the American South to a founding figure of funk and one of the most iconic musicians of the 20th century. Examining the music, moods and moves of Brown, the film provides rising star Chadwick Boseman with the role of a lifetime, tapping into Brown’s legendary charisma, troubled past and struggles with drug and alcohol abuse. A chronicle of the civil rights movement and potent combination of intense personal struggle, flamboyant costumes and rollicking tunes.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
