Synopsis
Many of us have enjoyed listening to elderly relatives talk about the past, hearing how different things once were. This film delivers a story to trump any of those conversations. When Cecil Gaines looks back on his career as a White House butler, serving eight different presidents, we learn how much American society has changed in just one lifetime. The Butler uses one man’s extraordinary journey, from a cotton plantation to the epicentre of global politics, to chronicle major events in US history like the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, as well as the experience of ordinary people.
