Synopsis

When railway engineer Duff Anderson meets Josie, a young schoolteacher whose father is a preacher, he yearns for a simple, family life. This is not easy though, for a black man in the 1960s American Deep South, with mounting racial tensions, and the Civil Rights Movement beginning to take shape. Duff's attempt to encourage solidarity amongst his black co-workers sends him on a grim journey of injustice, abuse and despair. This bleak but gripping drama shows the devastating and dehumanising effects of discrimination, and illustrates why radical action was required to change people's attitudes and try to achieve real equality. A landmark US indie film, with a superb Motown soundtrack.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
