Synopsis

This short animated feature is based on a children's novel by Michael Foreman about four football-loving young friends who enlist in the army and go off to fight in World War One. Freddie, Will, Billy and Lacey leave for France in pursuit of adventure, but all they find are the brutal hardships of trench warfare. On Christmas Day there is a brief respite as soldiers from each side enjoy a game of football in no man's land. However, it's not long before hostilities resume and tragedy strikes. It's a thought-provoking tale that skilfully avoids explicit violence, making it accessible even for younger viewers.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
