Growing up in a time of war is a harsh experience for any child or teenager - and so it proves for Jim Graham, the young hero of this excellent adaptation of a novel by British writer JG Ballard. Having spent the years before World War II living in luxury in the Chinese city of Shanghai, Jim is separated from his parents in the chaos that follows the Japanese invasion of China - and then finds himself imprisoned in an "internment camp" for foreigners. A poignant and powerful coming-of-age tale set against a backdrop of history in the making.
This film has a couple of uses of mild bad language and moderate violence.
