Join us at the Benbow Arts Space, where we will be showcasing three strikingly creative animations which reflect on experiences of autism and disability. Animator and artist, Jemima Hughes, will give a video introduction, and we will be joined by filmmakers Cameron Carr, Lucy Moles and Jane Lee for a Q&A, so that students can learn more about filmmaking and getting into the screen industries.
This careers event introduces young people to screen industry careers, including lesser-known roles across film.
About the Films
Imagination directed by Jemima Hughes
This paper-cut out, stop-frame animation takes a look at the inner life of a person with disabilities and their outlook on the world around them. What begins as a grey, listless day for the film's protagonist soon morphs into one of vibrancy, warmth, and colour after they visit an art exhibition. Surrounded by the paintings, they let their imagination come alive, which in turns grants them a new optimism to carry with them through the rest of the day. This short film, conceived and created by a disabled filmmaker, is a testament to the power of creativity and imagination.
Neri on Earth directed by Lucy Moles and Jane Lee
Having screened at this year's Oska Bright Film Festival, this is the final year project by University of Arts London students, Lucy Moles and Jane Lee. On the surface, Neri on Earth is about an alien girl struggling to fit in, but at its core, the film is a powerful reflection on autistic experiences and a celebration of being different.
Bubble Boy directed by Cameron Carr
Based on the filmmaker's lived experiences, Bubble Boy is about a non-verbal autistic boy who finds his own way of communicating. From National Film and Television School graduate, Cameron Carr.
