Long (12 plus activities)

Into Film proudly exclusively hosts Supa Modo on the Into Film+ platform a brand-new film streaming service for UK schools, created in partnership with Filmbankmedia.

This learning sequence, which was planned with the support of practising Film Studies and Media Studies teachers, focuses on the themes of filmmaking, identity and storytelling. It supports a range of curriculum areas including Film Studies, Media Studies, English and PSHE Education.

Educators may wish to use this sequence of lessons as a unit to introduce Film Studies subjects at the start of both GCSE and A-Level courses or as an introduction to the subject for students aged 11–14.

Each lesson’s starter activity is a lo-fi filmmaking challenge designed to test students’ ingenuity in solving a problem that filmmakers working with basic equipment and on a limited budget might face. The resource uses specially-selected clips from Supa Modo in the accompanying PowerPoint presentations as a stimulus to discuss the main theme of each lesson, ranging from superhero characters to memorialising an individual.

Learners develop their filmmaking skills during the course of the lessons, learning about the 3Cs and 3Ss of film (story, setting, sound, character, camera and colour) and plan a documentary film incorporating their learning. During the course of the lesson young people will be inspired by specially- shot footage and interviews with Supa Modo’s director, Likarion Wainaina where he explains how he overcame challenges to create the film.

It can be used in the classroom, adapted for home learning, and the activities can be cherry-picked for club sessions

Updating our resources

We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.

What our educators say

"Film is totally part of the curriculum throughout all subjects, at both Key Stages 3 and 4. We couldn't teach here without film!"
