3Cs and 3Ss dice and card
3Cs and 3Ss dice and card

Ages

5–14

Duration

Short (1-4 activities)

Nation

England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales

The 3Cs (colour, camera, character) and the 3Ss, (story, setting, sound) can be used to help students discuss and analyse all the elements of a film text. Working with the 3Cs and 3Ss enables students to make connections between the features of all texts, and develop their decoding, encoding, oracy, reading and writing skills.

After viewing a film sequence, just roll the dice and ask your students one of the corresponding questions. Students can become skilled at leading this activity for themselves as a starter activity or plenary for film text analysis.

Updating our resources

We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.

What our educators say

"The Filmmaking Guides have been invaluable in helping novice filmmakers, from ensuring their story is well told, to thinking about light, camera angles and editing."
