'Turning Red' and six more new titles added to Into Film+ for June

There is never a better time to comb through our huge, diverse catalogue of films than now, especially with seven new tremendous titles added to Into Film+, free for use in your classroom. Joining our jam-packed and inclusive films already on offer are a fresh and exuberant version of a Roald Dahl classic, an important insight into the struggles and achievements of the queer community, a Dwayne Johnson-led trip down an exotic, action-packed river and the discovery of a singing crocodile in a long-forgotten attic. 

These newly added titles join our growing catalogue of films available for schools to stream for free* that support the teaching of Film Studies. Each feature comes with a discussion guide to encourage students to delve deeper into the film's key themes through the context of film history, genre and theory. Turning Red

This funny, heartwarming, and thoughtful film teaches us about generational knowledge and reflects the complicated experiences of young girls at a pivotal time in their development whilst also centering East Asian experiences in North America. Mei Lee, a thirteen-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl, helps her mother look after a temple dedicated to their ancestor Sun Yee. Feeling pressured by her mother to be a dutiful and high-achieving daughter, Mei hides her personality and interests from her parents - notably her crush on a local shop's clerk and her love for the boy band 4* Town. Keeping her passions hidden from her mother becomes a challenge when Mei Lee unexpectedly turns into a giant, fluffy red panda every time she experiences strong emotions. Initially worried Mei's strange behaviour is due to the start of puberty, her parents disclose that this red panda transformation has been experienced by all the women in the family and that the affliction can be removed with a specific ritual...

Jungle Cruise

Based on the Walt Disney theme park attraction of the same name, Jungle Cruise is a fantasy-adventure that harkens back to the adventure stories of old whilst focusing on the advantages and dangers of exploration. In the early 20th century, riverboat captain Frank Wolff reluctantly agrees to guide two explorers into the South American jungle on their quest to find the Tree of Life. Adventurous scientist Dr. Lily Houghton and her younger brother MacGregor, seek to find the tree which is rumoured to contain healing properties that could be of great benefit to the medical world. During their mission, the trio come up against dangerous wild animals, must navigate the hot and deadly environment, and also have to contend with a rival German expedition who under the charge of a ruthless aristocrat seek to find the tree first.

Are You Proud?

The LGBTQ+ movement has come so far since the decriminalisation of homosexuality up until the work that there is still left to do and this inspiring documentary spans through a spectrum of rare footage and interviews, exploring key landmarks in the fight against homophobia and transphobia. Discussing movements that transformed human rights such as the Stonewall riots and Gay Pride, the film asks key questions about society while also posing urgent arguments around how racism and xenophobia impacts the lives of LGBTQ+ people of colour in the UK and around the world. Featuring pioneering and rising activists in the UK, this energetic documentary is a good introduction to human rights and activism, while also being a valuable resource on UK history.

Rye Lane

Showcasing an immersive filming style and gorgeous, colourful cinematography, Rye Lane is a truly fresh, authentic, and highly enjoyable regeneration of the British romantic comedy genre. After a chance encounter in the bathrooms of a photography exhibition, Dom and Yas wonder the streets of South London sharing banter and sob stories about their recent breakups. Dom is dreading meeting up with his ex-girlfriend of six years, who cheated on him with his best friend, so Yas decides to gate-crash their tense final meet-up to offer him some highly inventive moral support. Dom in turn helps Yas on her impulsive quest to break into her ex-boyfriend's house and retrieve her favourite record. The pair find solace and silliness in each other's company, but as new possibilities blossom between them, complicated feelings from their respective breakups seem to want to trip them up.

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical

Based on Roald Dahl's beloved children's book and adapted from the equally adored stage musical, this particular version is an inspirational coming-of-age film about rewriting your own story. Matilda Wormwood is a little girl with a big imagination and a love of reading but unfortunately she also has terrible parents who do little to further her curiosity or support her in any way. Matilda is excited when she is finally sent to school at Crunchem Hall but, upon arrival, finds it to be an oppressive place led by the scary Miss Trunchbull. However she also finds an inspirational teacher there, Miss Honey, who encourages Matilda to remain resolute, kind, and inquisitive. Together with her school friends, Matilda is intent on standing up for what's right, using the powers she finds within herself to challenge authority and make the world a better place. 

The film contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile

Adapted from the best-selling book series, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is a heartwarming story about family, friendship, and community featuring original songs.When the Primm family moves to New York City, their young son Josh struggles to adapt to his new school and new friends. Everything changes when he discovers a large crocodile named Lyle living in his attic who loves, amongst other things, to sing and take baths! They quickly become close friends and so when Lyle's residence is threatened by their horrible neighbour Mr. Grumps, the Primms must team up with the crocodile's eccentric owner, Hector P. Valenti, to show the world that Lyle is very much a part of their family.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

For a cat like Puss in Boots, the legendary feline swordfighter of fairytale fame, death is nothing to be feared after all, cats have nine lives. But his swashbuckling antics mean he now only has one precious life left. Just as he decides to play it safe as a domestic pet, he is once again catapulted into a dangerous adventure by a hooded wolf and the criminal gang Goldilocks and the Three Bears, whom he fights alongside his one-time fiancée Kitty Softpaws and a poorly disguised dog named Perrito. Together, they set out to find the mythical Wishing Star, the only thing that can return Puss to a full set of nine lives. With all the action, excitement, and enchantment we've come to know and love from the Shrek franchise, this subversive tale is as much about humility as it is about taking risks.
