The 63rd BFI London Film Festival launches with The Personal History of David Copperfield, the cinematic adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Young of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account).
Written and directed by the multi-talented Armundo Iannuci, the film features an exciting cast of British actors including Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Hugh Laurie.
The story follows David Copperfield from his early years right through to middle age as he traces his social awakening, major personal ups and downs and witnesses all the good and bad humanity has to offer. The film weaves social justice issues throughout and explores lack of protection for children, poor industrial conditions for the working class and inequality. If you're studying Charles Dickens this term, we're screening several Dickens adaptations at the Into Film Film Festival to help you bring his literature to life.
