Spike Lee's latest political satire, BlackKklansman arrives on screens this week and is our leading film. Based on the memoir by Ron Stallworth, the first African-American police officer in Colorado, USA, the film follows his infiltration of the Ku Klux Klan and his mission to expose the hate group's violent plans, with the help of a Jewish police officer and an activist college student. Set in the 70s, the film is a slick and outrageous comedy about America's history of racism that also addresses the current political climate.
A boy goes on an epic adventure with a wolf during the last Ice Age in the epic Alpha; a judge must make an ethical decision when ruling on whether to force a young Jehovah's Witness to have a blood transfusion in Ian McEwan adaptation, The Children Act; Elvis Presley's legacy is explored in connection to modern day America in documentary The King; and an 11-year-old boy is met with three aliens when they crash their UFO into his house in Luis & the Aliens.
This British psychological thriller follows a woman in her twenties who is unhappy to return to her family home in Jersey, with a struggling relationship with her overbearing mother and a father with Alzheimer's. When she meets Pascal, she is enticed by his secretive character and the two go on to form an intense relationship that is disrupted when he is linked to a series of murders on the island. Torn between her family and the man she loves, she becomes wrapped in the mystery. This impressive debut from director Michel Pearce is a thrilling and at times disturbing watch.
