So Hotel Transylvania.
An Adam Sandler movie.
So to kick off October/Halloween or Spooktober I like to call it. I thought it would be a good idea to watch this movie but mainly because the internet don't really talk much about it, so why.
(1 Hour and 30 Minutes Later)
So after watching it, it was good surprisingly good. I ended up liking it more than I was a kid. However, I don't love it.
So without a further-a-do let's get into it:
The things I like:
Firstly, to start off of the animation (simply I always start with the animation for every animated movie) is quite good.
I love the cartoony energy to it, it reminds a lot of the old Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry cartoons. It really makes it makes the movie unquie of utilize the cartoony vibe which I feel like a lot of the CGI Animation lacks these features (particularly most of the Illumination and some of the other Sony animated films movies). Its not bad by any means but some times the CGI animation makes the charaters stand and it makes it really awkard for me.
I also really like the character designs, I love it basically stylised movie monsters.
Another point to this movie is the premise itself and the biggest high light for me. The idea of classic movie monsters going to a hotel is a safe heaven for the monsters away from the humans. I really like and I think the movie does an decent job of showing its world building.
Like the monsters eat disgusting stuff or unusally stuff like scream cheese of all things, the monsters view the sun light as night and night is like morning, that's a neat reversal.
I like it taking place in the morden world where the monsters thought that the humans are still evil creatures but when Drac got to the feastival the humans embrace the monsters instead of killing it, I like that neat detail.
The movie structure is actually quite good, on paper it sounds like Drac and John messed up the place and going just this location sounds boring, right? Not really, you see the movie wants you to explore the world and doesn't want to waste your time. It doesn't want you to fill so much information of how or what it works or what it came from. You that information of the first opening and that's it.
I like the movie structure of Mathra of the first opening and your like: "Who is she?"
The movie makes you wonder until it was reveal of she died because of humans (which I'll get to later don't worry).
The funny is funny: I was surprised that the comedy was funnier then I remember. It rely on slap-stick humour which is kind of fun to to watch. Okay the fart and butt childish humour is present but to be fair its not the worst example and done in a way that's pretty passable. Like they don't over-used it by any means.
I wasn't expect the humour also rely of characters jabbing at each other, like when Johnny saw Frank for the first time and thought why do monsters are always against humans because of racisum. Yeah that got me there. I'm so glad they don't go for the puns, get the refrence or other childish, cringy humour they could have gone with.
Also Johnny go through a skelaton female's bone, they make an assult joke (twice). Hilarious, any ways.
The characters are surprisingly quite likable, none of the characters aren't or get on my nerves. I think the voice cast is decent in this because they bring the charactewrs to life while protraying their voice based on their designs and personalities.
My favourite happens to be Frankstain as Kevin James, he done a good job of bring he's slightly more tough side of him but also he's more anxious side of fear of fire.
"Remeber, fire bad."
He is a very funny comedian and he played as Paul Kart.
I also love David Spade as Griffin/Invisible Man, he does a good job of making him the straight man (I meant by character trait not their s*xually you Dirty Dan Schneiders!) ,he is also a really funny and plays as Kuzco from The Emperor's New Groove.
I quite like Steve Buscemi as Wanye, he gives off dad vibes, like he want to have enough of he's kids at this point.
I actually thinks Sandler's character on Drac fits perfectly. He gives this slight old vibe and both making him sound like Dracula is done very well and none of feels awkard or scratchy.
Sure he's character arc of not being over pretective and learning that the humans he hates aren't as bad as they used to be maybe a little too predictable but its not done poorly its done well enough that you have an understanding he's hatred and want to protect everyone from being hurt ever again.
The things I don't like:
Mathra reveal could had been more emotional: Just what I said the movie tried to setup of Mathra and Johnny said that she feel in love with a man in Luboz castle with a the briliant score and camera angles. But when Drac reveal it was he's wife and the flash back scene is done well however the part where Mathra is done badly that it kills the tone for me! I'm sorry, she could have move elsewhere, I mean the flames aren't violenty flamming and how she got caught on to it. Its done off screen and its really dumb to think about it!
This an emotional moment and they some how blow it up in a very cookie cutter way! It maybe the worst scene in the movie for me because it was setup, tied in the score and pacing so well and they slip the ice crack!
I also as a kid thought the third was my least favourite and now re-watching it, its still my least favourite because I do feel like it drags a little too long and the ending is rap up a little too quickly by the rap a song and a classic generic kids movie dance party that is just filler but to be fair again its not the worst example out there. Also by the time I was writing this review I was listening to You're my Zing ironicly and its a good song.
final Thoughts: So overrall, despite my problems with this movie I had a good time with this.
Its the better Sony animated movie because there are far, far worse films on Sony's filmography and I haven't seen an Adam Sandler movie other then Pixels which I have seen a long time so I can't compare and I seen Leo which is a okay movie I guess.
I would give movie a chance a watch if you didn't, you might get something out of this movie. Also I do like Adam Sandler as a person, not in a sense of he's films but as he is a nice guy, in fact, most of the voice cast I just said are he's friends and you can't say the same to other famous celebrities.
So that's everything I got to say.
