Synopsis

Part romance and part mystery, this handsome and moving tale of courage and determination in wartime begins with the stories of five men who are sent to almost certain death by their own army after attempting to escape from military service during World War One. With their fates left unknown, we flash forward to just a couple of years after the war has ended and meet Mathilde, the heartbroken but ruggedly determined fiancé of the youngest of these men, Manech. Holding onto the slightest chance that Manech may still be alive, Mathilde uses the money that her parents left her to set out and uncover the mystery of what happened to the love of her life whilst also unearthing the complex tales of the other four soldiers who were condemned to death. Surprisingly funny and full of sparkling characters, this film invites you on an epic tale through 20th century French history via interconnected stories of hope, loss and love.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
