In December 1941, cynical American expatriate Rick Blaine owns a nightclub in Casablanca, Morocco which attracts a varied clientele, including Nazi officials, refugees seeking passage to the US, and those keen to exploit the war. Rick professes to be impartial in these matters, but his supposed neutrality is tested when sought after letters of transit fall into his hands. These papers allow the holders to travel freely through German-occupied Europe and are, as such, a priceless commodity in Casablanca. When his former lover Ilsa Lund enters his establishment alongside her husband Victor Laszlo – a renowned resistance leader – Rick must decide whether or not to hand over the letters, under pressure from the authorities. Containing one of the most famous love triangles in cinema history, ‘Casablanca’ is a stirring tale of romance, duty, and sacrifice.
Humphrey Bogart in a career-defining role as tough detective Sam Spade.
