Adapted from Mary Shelley's classic Gothic horror novel, this macabre masterpiece begins with a darkly ambitious scientist, Henry Frankenstein, and his assistant Fritz digging up fresh bodies in a graveyard. Frankenstein plans to piece together parts of these cadavers to create a human, then bring it to life using electricity. Concerned by the scientist’s secretive behaviour, his fiancée Elizabeth, his former teacher Dr Waldman, and his friend Victor visit Frankenstein at the hilltop tower where he is conducting his experiments. Here they witness Frankenstein’s creature coming alive. Despite its monstrous appearance, the creature seems to be innocent and childlike. But when cruelly bated by Fritz, the Monster turns dangerously aggressive, leading Frankenstein to wonder in horror at what he has done. An enduringly iconic film that has had a significant impact on popular culture, this adaptation was genuinely shocking when first released and helped kick-start the golden age of Universal horror.
