Synopsis

Based on the life of John Merrick, who suffered from severe physical deformities that made his face barely recognisable as human, this period piece drama details his life’s journey during the Victorian era in London. Mistreated and exploited as a circus act during his younger years, John is soon spotted, rescued and brought to London by the Queen's own doctor Frederick Treves. This new world of manners and social etiquette promises kindness and hope for John but the shadow of exploitation looms over his very existence and the threat of a return to his old life is never far away. Directed by the visionary filmmaker David Lynch, this is a stylish black and white tale that showcases the importance of empathy to those who may be different whilst also examining what it means to be a human being.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
