A pair of conmen - a boorish American and suave Englishman - lock horns on the French Riviera. The place isn't big enough for both of them, so they make an ungentlemanly bet that whichever of them can con a sweet young heiress out of her fortune can stay, while the loser has to leave. Steve Martin and Michael Caine deliver fantastic performances, while the film's refusal to sugar-coat its less-than-admirable characters makes it all the more cruelly hilarious.
This sprightly, stylish movie, set in Chicago in the 1930s, follows a pair of confidence tricksters as they pull off the biggest job of their careers.
