Synopsis

Paul Newman stars as a prisoner who stands up to the brutal regime of a Florida chain gang in this famous and much-acclaimed 1967 drama. After being convicted for a drunken night of destroying parking meters, Luke (played by Newman) refuses to serve out his sentence quietly. His rebellious nature earns him the respect of his fellow inmates - but also the special attention of those in charge, who are intent on breaking his spirit. Star Newman produced possibly his best work during the 1960s, and he's at his most charismatic here, playing an underdog battling the odds.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
