In 1893 British rulers in India collect land taxes, known as 'lagaan', from the areas under their control. However, after a particularly dry season the crops have failed and a small farming village can barely afford to pay up. When the villagers try to persuade their British local ruler to excuse them from the tax, they are instead surprised to find themselves challenged to a game of cricket. If they triumph, the tax will be written off - but if they lose, it will be increased. Unfortunately, none of the villagers have a clue how the game is played- but they are determined to learn if it will mean saving the village.
