Synopsis

In 1839, captured Africans led by the charismatic tribal leader Cinque stage a mutiny aboard the slave ship Amistad. After enduring brutal abuse at the hands of the ship's crew, the slaves break free, taking over the ship and sailing on to the "New World" of America. However, upon arrival, they are imprisoned and charged with murder - as well as with being runaway slaves, then considered almost as serious a crime. With the case finally going to the Supreme Court, will the Africans get the justice they deserve? The answer lies in this powerful and moving film from director Steven Spielberg.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
