Synopsis

In 1558, after Mary I of England dies from a cancerous tumour, her half-sister and heir Elizabeth – daughter of Anne Boleyn – who is under house arrest for conspiracy charges, is freed and crowned queen. Her advisor William Cecil informs her that she is inheriting a suffering country tormented by debts, crumbling infrastructure, hostile neighbours, and treasonous nobility within her administration, specifically the Duke of Norfolk who seeks to overthrow the Protestant queen to restore the Catholic line. Cecil advises Elizabeth to marry and produce an heir in order to secure her position, but Elizabeth is unimpressed with her suitors and instead carries on with a secret affair. Meanwhile, Mary of Guise lands thousands of French troops in Scotland, prompting a hasty military response from Elizabeth which further undermines her authority and threatens her rule. ‘Elizabeth’ is an historical biography of one of British history’s most fascinating royal figures, exploring themes including religion, citizenship, and duty to one’s country.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
