Synopsis

In this groundbreaking black and white French-language film, Michel is a young crook who styles himself on elegant noir movie gangsters such as Humphrey Bogart. After stealing a car and killing a policeman, he decides to lie low in Paris and gather enough money to go on the run. He seeks out an American girl he once had a fling with, Patricia, who is an aspiring journalist living in Paris. As they saunter between the iconic Avenue des Champs-Élysées and 1960s shabby chic bedsits, the law slowly catches up with Michel. Shot with a loose hand-held camera and accompanied by an equally jazzy score, Jean-Luc Godard’s debut feature is regarded as a masterpiece of the French New Wave art film movement and has inspired countless filmmakers since.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
