These 1920s silent black-and-white films follow the London sleuth Sherlock Holmes as he uses his incredible powers of detection and masterful disguises to get to the bottom of three confounding mysteries: in A Scandal in Bohemia, he meets his match in the actress Irene Adler as he tries to track down a vital piece of evidence; in The Golden Pince-Nez, the police ask Holmes for assistance when a murderer seems to vanish in thin air; and Holmes meets his nemesis the sinister Professor Moriarty in The Final Problem. Featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s favourite actor to have portrayed his famous character, these newly restored films are accompanied by a specially commissioned score created in partnership with the Royal Academy of Music. Each twenty-minute episode is dramatic, funny and gently suspenseful, offering plenty of examples of mystery genre tropes and early filmmaking techniques.
