Since Donald Trump’s first election as president in 2017, a sweeping wave of book bans have taken place across the US, from Texas to Florida. These have been implemented by the political far-right on a local level, censoring liberal and progressive content, focusing on topics such as LGBTQ+ rights, race relations, and sex education. This has occurred through political and religious groups targeting local libraries, librarians and schools – all under the guise of protecting children – to put incredible amounts of pressure, scrutiny, and hardship on those responsible for such decisions through harassment, threats, and legal challenges. This documentary charts the above but also explores how these gatekeepers of education and access to ideas are prepared to fight back to defend democracy. Featuring emotional interviews and passionate school board meetings, 'The Librarians’ is a prescient film about censorship, political extremism, and the fight for a better future.
Classification very strong language, child sexual abuse references, discrimination
