Within the Yorkshire town of Ramsden, there are changes taking place. Not only are more and more men heading off to fight in the Great War, but this has a knock-on effect for the villagers at home. With the choir’s ranks becoming depleted and their annual performance for the community looming, they must search for new recruits, starting with a conductor. Those in charge of the choral society reluctantly agree upon the appointment of Dr Henry Guthrie, a brilliant but somewhat controversial figure due to him having recently lived in Germany, as well as being rumoured to be gay. Guthrie enlists new, assorted voices from the military hospital and wider community to supplement their dwindling numbers, which initially upsets and threatens the traditional views of the longer-standing members, but over time Guthrie’s new perspective soon begins to win over his doubters. ‘The Choral’ is an earnest and progressive comedy-drama which highlights the diverse perspectives and experiences of everyday civilians during wartime Britain.
