Having moved from his home in Birmingham to study at Oxford University, orphan J.R.R. Tolkien forms a “fellowship” with his student peers, a group of artists and writers with whom he finds encouragement and comradery. As their bond grows over the years, Tolkien meets Edith Bratt and soon falls in love with her. But with the sudden outbreak of World War One, Tolkien’s relationships come under threat, and he must endure the horrors of the Great War alongside his young friends. ‘Tolkien’ demonstrates the inspiration the author took from his most formative life experiences to create his acclaimed allegory, ‘The Lord of the Rings’, one of the most celebrated books of the 20th century.
