This bold reimagining of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Hamlet transposes the story from medieval Denmark to the urban cityscape of contemporary London. The film follows a British South-Asian Prince Hamlet as he returns to his wealthy family after the sudden death of his father. In this dizzying world of elite high society, Hamlet is confronted with his mother’s swift remarriage to his Uncle Claudius, heightening his suspicion that his father’s death may not have been accidental. After encountering the ghost of his father, who confirms his suspicions, Hamlet descends into the city’s underground to track down those responsible. Finding himself drawn to Hindu temples and through homeless camps, becoming lost in a bewildering world of deceit and betrayal, he is lead to question his own place in a fractured dynasty. Dynamic and intense, this is as modern as Shakespeare gets.
Classification strong bloody violence, implied very strong language
