Synopsis

This period drama, inspired by real historical events and based on the best-selling novel of the same name, takes the immersive power of cinema to a new level, as we perceive segregation and friendship in the Jim Crow era of the United States, quite literally, through the eyes of a sixteen-year-old African American named Elwood. Quiet, clever and idealistic, Elwood one day happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and is sent to Nickel Academy, a brutal reform school where he must quickly adapt to an unfamiliar lifestyle away from his adoring mother. The one silver lining is his burgeoning friendship with Taylor, another boy at the school, who helps Elwood keep in touch with his humanity and passions. However, appalled by the exploitation and abuse taking place at Nickel, Elwood hatches a daring plan to expose the school for its sins and escape the racist institutions that are holding him back. Filmed with an innovative style, Nickel Boys acts as historical document, experimental cinema and searingly thoughtful drama all at once.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
