Synopsis

In this short piece produced by the Children’s Film Foundation, a boy called Ian from Ayrshire in south-west Scotland writes to a pen friend in America. The film offers a snapshot of Scottish life in 1954, as Ian describes a typical day in his household, from his sister making shortbread to roaming around the local area with his brother. We thus get a virtual tour of the Ayrshire’s industries and points of interest, including a school trip to a lace-making factory, encounters with Ayrshire cattle and racehorses, plane spotting from Prestwick airfield, and a bike ride over the river Doon, which inspired Robert Burns’ poem ‘Ye Banks and Braes’. This nostalgic and insightful film would have been made for Saturday morning matinée cinema programming reaching young audiences all around the UK.
