Film travelogues were popularised in the early twentieth century in the age of newsreels. They were a form of documentaries to promote travel, and this one transports us to 1940s Lancashire, proudly showcasing its industrial developments and pastoral lands. These include the Manchester Ship Canal, Bolton’s textile factories, Nelson’s expansive public parks, Blackpool’s bustling beaches and the rolling hills and shimmering waters of the Lake District. Enchanted by this virtual tourism, the audience is introduced to another great wonder of Lancashire - Lanry laundry detergent, the manufacturers of which sponsored the making of this travelogue. Much like subsequent 1950s adverts targeting housewives, it includes a catchy slogan and depicts a commodified lifestyle. A fascinating time capsule of familiar locations, offering discussion points on the history of media and advertising.
