This short documentary looks at the lives of young British Asians and the role that cultural identity plays in their lives. Made in 1989, the film still rings with relevance and relatability, showing how social issues that young people may experience today were similarly navigated by previous generations of second generation immigrants growing up in the UK. Interviews with young people who feel just as strongly Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or English as they do Asian are set against archive footage of 1980s Britain. They speak about how they feel about bilingualism, religion, and, most importantly, music. Their mixed heritage and fresh perspectives influence the evolution of Bhangra music, and the film is underscored by traditional Bangla and Punjabi songs mixed with hip-hop and house music. Directed by Gurinder Chadha, who went on to make hits such as Bend it Like Beckham and Blinded by the Light, this debut film shows her own evolution as a filmmaker while celebrating the expanding meaning of Britishness.
