Synopsis

Clothes can tell a story and communicate much about a person’s identity, a statement that can be worn with pride, love and strength. The Dirac is a colourful, loose-fitting Somali dress, traditionally worn by women on special occasions such as Eid and weddings. In this short film, the Dirac becomes a symbol of unapologetically embracing cultural heritage and diversity, as young Somali women model it against the grey backdrop of the Cardiff neighbourhoods of Butetown, Grangetown and Cathays. Photographer Ashrah Suudy captures these striking scenes, accompanying them with her own stirring poem celebrating the strength of sisterhood and the power of fabric in enriching our lives and imbuing them with pride.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
