Synopsis

At the height of the Civil Rights Movement, 250,000 people gathered peacefully in the US capital city for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous speech invoking an end to violence and discrimination. Six decades later, injustice against Black people continues to claim innocent lives, including those of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor among others. This documentary explores how societal attitudes, vigilantism, and institutional racism can reverberate through time, using archival footage and insightful interviews with activists and historians to examine the context of the 1963 march and draw links with more recent nonviolent demonstrations. With startling poignancy, we see how the iconic monumental expanse of Washington’s National Mall once again hosted a mass gathering in 2020 for a Black Lives Matter protest. By looking back through history, this documentary cries out for accountability and a change in systems today.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
