Synopsis

Following a series of racist police raids at his Caribbean restaurant The Mangrove, Trinidadian owner Frank Crichlow and local Black activists join up to protest the discrimination they faced. After one protest ends in a violent clash with the police, Crichlow and others dubbed ‘The Mangrove Nine’ face a court battle on a series of serious charges. This was a landmark trial in UK legal history – it was the first time a judge acknowledged evidence of racial hatred within the Metropolitan Police. Released shortly after the 2020 summer of Black Lives Matter protests, Mangrove is a powerful commentary on systemic and societal racism in the UK.
