Synopsis

In the South Wales valleys, Jan Vokes works two jobs in a supermarket and a bar. Looking for something to give her life some excitement every day, she stumbles upon an idea: to buy, breed and train a champion racehorse. With neither the money nor the experience to do so alone, however, she asks members of the community to join her ambitious project as equal partners. Despite their initial reservations, Jan’s enthusiasm convinces them to get on board, and they decide to name the horse Dream Alliance. But they still need to find a suitable trainer for it, and with the middle-class racing community looking down at the working-class syndicate with ridicule, that’s easier said than done. Determined not to be put off by the unfamiliarity of it all, Jan and the others set out to prove the doubters wrong. Based on a true story and the documentary ‘Dark Horse’, this is a stirring slice of feel-good British cinema.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
